What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

In this chapter, we’re going to learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopted by the United Nations in 2015, the SDGs provide a global framework that emphasizes balanced development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions on a global scale.

Goals and targets

The SDGs are organized into 17 goals, each of which is broken down into 169 targets. They cover a wide range of areas to drive global sustainable development and respond to a variety of challenges.

International commitment

The SDGs were created through the collaboration and participation of 193 countries and emphasize the importance of working together to achieve a sustainable future. The goals cover a wide range of areas and aim to achieve sustainable development that considers the interests of both current and future generations.

Introducing the main goals

1. ‘End of poverty’

First, there is the goal to “end poverty. It seeks to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, ensuring access to the basic necessities of life and opportunities for economic independence.

2. ‘End of hunger’

Our second goal is ‘End Hunger’ – we work to tackle global hunger by achieving food security and improving nutritional status.

3. ‘Health and well-being’

The third goal is ‘Health and well-being’. It aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for people of all ages.

4. ‘Qualitative education’

The fourth goal is ‘Quality Education’. By ensuring quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities, we help all people to improve their knowledge and skills and to adapt.

5. ‘Gender equality’

The fifth goal is ‘Gender Equality’. Empowering women and girls and achieving gender equality is about pursuing social justice and ensuring that all human beings have equal opportunities.

Goals six through seventeen are about clean water, clean energy, economic growth, industry and innovation, reducing inequality, sustainable cities and communities, responsible production and consumption, climate action, life in the water, life on land, peace and justice, strong institutions, and partnerships to achieve the goals.

Essentially, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) seek an international community that benefits all people economically and socially, with poverty reduction and inequality reduction as key goals. The SDGs are recognized as an important tool for fostering cooperation among nations and a global commitment to sustainable development, as they all present common goals that the world’s nations can work together to achieve. The SDGs are therefore interpreted as a collective effort by the international community to respond to global challenges and provide a structured framework for a sustainable future, in which all nations and individuals can work together to fulfill their responsibilities.

These goals are a blueprint for a sustainable future for our planet, and we believe that each of us can play a role in making them a reality. It’s time for us to work together to create a beautiful future for our planet.
